Summary

The Art of Thinking Clearly by world-class thinker and entrepreneur Rolf Dobelli is an eye-opening look at human psychology and reasoning -- essential reading for anyone who wants to avoid "cognitive errors" and make better choices in all aspects of their lives。

Have you ever: Invested time in something that, with hindsight, just wasn't worth it? Or continued doing something you knew was bad for you? These are examples of cognitive biases, simple errors we all make in our day-to-day thinking。 But by knowing what they are and how to spot them, we can avoid them and make better decisions。

Simple, clear, and always surprising, this indispensable book will change the way you think and transform your decision-making--work, at home, every day。 It reveals, in 99 short chapters, the most common errors of judgment, and how to avoid them。

The book deals with cognitive psychology, especially our thinking biases。The first chapter “Why You Should Visit Cemeteries” talks about our high expectations of success, and that we had better not learn from examples of success but explore unsuccessful cases。 Moreover we should avoid acknowledging pure coincidences as “success factors”。 I liked the chapter “Murder your darlings”。 The author says: “Whether you go through life believing that “people are inherently good” or “people are inherently The book deals with cognitive psychology, especially our thinking biases。The first chapter “Why You Should Visit Cemeteries” talks about our high expectations of success, and that we had better not learn from examples of success but explore unsuccessful cases。 Moreover we should avoid acknowledging pure coincidences as “success factors”。 I liked the chapter “Murder your darlings”。 The author says: “Whether you go through life believing that “people are inherently good” or “people are inherently bad”, you will find daily proof to support your case。 It means that we are influenced by a confirmation bias that misleads us in our thoughts。 Dobelli gives the reader an advice to think of their own beliefs in terms of worldview, relations, health – and set the mind to find disconfirming evidences。I was tricked by chapter "You Were Right All Long"“It’s safe to assume that half of what you remember is wrong! Our memories are riddled with inaccuracies。。”; take notes of your thoughts and predictions, update your diary。 。。。more

A great collection of the different kinds of errors, biases and fallacies we fall prey to。 Difficult to grasp everything in one go though

To be savoured, not devoured。

A bit rough on the edge。 Explanations are not so clear at times。

I liked the organization of this book describing cognitive biases。 Learning the names of them is easier from this book compared to “thinking fast and slow”。

当你在做出重大决定时,请在清单上一项项检查这些bias,当然如果你在做每个选择时都这么做的话——你会被累死。

I regard it as a simple yet interesting introduction to more advanced discussions in this area of knowledge。 The books is not much practical though because Dobelli just briefly introduces the biases already put forward by other thinkers without satisfactory explanation。

Wish I could read this book again for the first time。As the book suggest, it shines light on destructive mindsets you didn't realise you have and lays bare your biases。 It teaches you when to be intuitive and when to be rational。Great for individuals who are not optimistic by nature; instead of ways to think or be positive, it shows you how things are not wholly bad or good。 Respect to Rolf Dobelli for the amazing yet difficult work of keeping the writing concise yet impactful。 Every chapter has Wish I could read this book again for the first time。As the book suggest, it shines light on destructive mindsets you didn't realise you have and lays bare your biases。 It teaches you when to be intuitive and when to be rational。Great for individuals who are not optimistic by nature; instead of ways to think or be positive, it shows you how things are not wholly bad or good。 Respect to Rolf Dobelli for the amazing yet difficult work of keeping the writing concise yet impactful。 Every chapter has something to teach you in less than a 4 mins read。 I bought the eBook to save money, but will definitely be buying the hardcopy to make annotations。 Highly recommended! 。。。more

Digestible and to the point, everything you need to know bias and how to counteract them。

There is nothing original in this book。。。 however, the author doesn't claim there is。 It is a great summary of all of the shortcuts and "glitches" the human brain makes that interfere with sound reasoning。 This is a great introductory book to the subject that can point you to the sources to learn more。 Also a great, consolidated recap for those that are already familiar with the idiosyncrasies of the human mind。 Don't original/new content or in depth discussion on each and you won't be disappoin There is nothing original in this book。。。 however, the author doesn't claim there is。 It is a great summary of all of the shortcuts and "glitches" the human brain makes that interfere with sound reasoning。 This is a great introductory book to the subject that can point you to the sources to learn more。 Also a great, consolidated recap for those that are already familiar with the idiosyncrasies of the human mind。 Don't original/new content or in depth discussion on each and you won't be disappointed。 If you are looking for something on the topic with a more of the underlying science, check out the Audible Great Course, "Your Deceptive Mind"。 。。。more

A useful compendium of cognitive biases with anecdotal explanations rather than scientific discussions。 Would recommend giving it a read to become aware of all those subtle biases we harbor。

A good book to be aware of major biases

Antonio Peña

Good stories, the book itself becomes a good way to identify certain biases。 I think this may be very helpful if you are an economist, marketer, or even an investor; however, certain biases apply to all subjects。 Notwithstanding the foregoing, certain stories were bored; thus, sometimes was harder to read。

A very useless book! It just lists some cognitive biases and human errors without any deeper investigations。 I counted a lot of errors introduced in the book itself。 It's not completely and necessarily wrong at its best! Read it twice。 Dense with information on cognitive biases and fallacies。 Recommended for some self awareness points。

This book contains 99 easy to consume, bite-sized chapters。 The ideas and concepts are borrowed from various authors like Nassim Nicholas Taleb and Robert Cialdini。 It sheds light upon various biases and thinking fallacies。 Most of them are well explained, but some seem to fall short and the arguments seem hollow。 A great read nonetheless。 A great book for people beginning to read non-fiction。
